Checklist To Prepare For Moving Day

Moving can be stressful. The more you plan ahead, the easier your move will be. Use our checklist to help you prepare for your next move.

Four-Six Weeks Before Your Move
Hold a garage sale to get
rid of the things you don't want to take.
Write down your time-frame
plan to move.
Review your moving
arrangements now and every week.
List the business’s and
people you will need to contact
Create a list of moving
expenses
Keep all receipts.
Get estimates from moving companies.
Arrange for a storage
facility if you’ll need one.
Arrange transport service
for vehicles or pets, if needed.
Contact your bank, arrange
transfer of accounts.
Submit change-of-address forms to the Post Office
Notify schools that your
children will be moving if out of the area.
Contact new schools, arrange
for transfer of records.
Contact your doctors to get
referrals for new physicians.
Change your insurance
policies if needed; property, auto, and medical.
Put important documents in a
fire-safe box.
Cancel or change your
address for newspaper and magazine subscriptions.
Arrange for temporary
housing, if needed.
Two-Three Weeks Before Your Move
Begin packing things not
used on a daily basis.
Fill and transfer
prescriptions for family and pets. Pack them to travel with you.
Arrange for shipment of
plants.
Coordinate transport of
pets.
Visit your vet to get immunization
records for your pets.
Dispose of or give away all
flammables; you won’t be able to transport them.
Give away or get rid of any
remaining items that you don't want to take.
Arrange for disconnection
and changeover of utilities.
Get the measurements of
rooms in your new house to determine where furniture will be placed.
Avoid buying too much
perishable food items.
One Week Before Your Move
Transfer checking and
savings accounts if needed.
Drain fuel and oil from
lawnmowers and other power equipment.
Drain water hoses.
Pack items to be carried in
the car, and label "Do Not Move."
Gather valuables from safe
deposit box, drawers, jewelry cases as well as personal records. Pack them
safely to take with you.
Bring clothing, draperies,
curtains, rugs, etc. out for cleaning and leave in wrapping.
Take down curtain rods,
shelves and other such items you are taking with you.
Have the car serviced for
the trip; oil change, tires, washer fluid, etc.
Put proof of insurance in
car.
Create an inventory list of
all items going with you personally.
Confirm arrangements and
dates with moving and storage companies.
Inform friends and relatives
of your new address.
Have your cleaning supplies packed,
marked and ready for when you arrive.
Pack yard and shed items.
Confirm arrangements with
auto and pet transportation companies.
One-Two Days Before Your Move
Clean and defrost the
refrigerator and freezer.
Close bank accounts.
Purchase traveler's checks,
if needed.
Finish all financial matters
relating to the sale or lease of your home.
Finish packing all your
belongings.
Moving Day
Remember to pack a box of
basics you’ll need on move-in day Load

Pack personal bags for trip.

Conduct a last minute walk
